The Rideau Canal Waterway is a boater's paradise, attracting
pleasure boats from across North America to travel its 202 kilometre
(125 mile) length. The Rideau Canal; a National Historic Site of Canada, a Canadian Heritage River and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consists of a series of beautiful lakes and rivers connected by
canals. It stretches from Kingston, at the foot of Lake Ontario,
to Ottawa, Canada's capital. Maintained by Canada's Parks
service it is arguably the most scenic waterway in North America. Whether you visit by boat, car, bicycle or on foot, the Rideau has something for you.

![]() ![]() I've written four books about the Rideau Canal. A History of the Rideau Lockstations, all about the construction of the Rideau Canal, was first published in 2000. Tales of the Rideau, non-fiction (factual) stories about the Rideau Canal, was first published in 2010. ![]() Engineered Landscapes, a research document about the early Rideau surveys, the pre-canal geography, and the flooding of the Rideau by canal dams, was first published in 2006. The Rideau Route: Exploring the Pre-Canal Waterway, a general audience re-write of Part 1 of Engineered Landscapes, was first published in 2007.For more information have a look at the A History of the Rideau Lockstations book page, the The Rideau Route book page. and the Engineered Landscapes book page. In 2008 I edited "The Sweeney Diary: The 1839 to 1850 Journal of Rideau Lockmaster Peter Sweeney" as a volunteer project on behalf of Friends of the Rideau. The book includes the fascinating diary of the first lockmaster at Jones Falls. It also includes The Life and Times of Peter Sweeney and Who's Who in the Diary by local historian Sue Warren. Anyone interested in a first hand account of life in Upper Canada, of an early Rideau lockmaster, or just interested in a good read will enjoy this book. It's available for sale through Friends of the Rideau or at some local bookstores.
