Driving Tours of the Rideau Canal

FALL COLOUR TOUR

Note: although the intinerary for this trip starts in Kingston, it's a loop and so could be started at any point (i.e. Westport or Delta) along the trip. See map at bottom of page.

Kingston, via Montreal Street to Cty Rd. 11 to Sunbury - Head north from Kingston, along Montreal Street to Sunbury.

Sunbury, north on Cty Rd. 11 to Battersea and Jones Falls - At Sunbury, continue north at a leisurely pace up Cty Rd. 11, through Battersea, Keelerville and Jones Falls. Feel free to take any little side road where the colour is particularly attractive. This is a "stop and smell the daisies" trip. After you cross the bridge at Jones Falls, look for a sign to the right leading you to the Hotel Kenney. Head down that road and stop for a few minutes at the locks. Have a walk around, looking at the wonderful contrast of the still green lawns, grey stonework, and the colours of the maples and oaks.

Jones Falls via Cty Rd. 11 to Hwy. 15, north on Hwy. 15 to Cty Rd. 9.- After leaving Jones Falls, head east along Cty Rd. 11 to the junction with Hwy. 15. Head north on 15, past Elgin (feel free to stop and look around), to Cty Rd. 9 (Chaffeys Lock Road). Turn left (west) onto Cty Rd. 9 towards Chaffeys Lock.

Cty Rd. 9 to Chaffeys Lock to Cty Rd. 10- head west down Cty Rd. 9 to Chaffeys Lock. Stop at the lock and look around. On Thanksgiving Weekend the Lockmasters House Museum is usually open (with hot cider available). Once you've taken in Chaffeys Lock continue on Cty Rd. 9 to Cty Rd. 10

Cty Rd. 10 to Westport- head west down Cty Rd. 9 to Chaffeys Lock. Stop at the lock and look around. On Thanksgiving Weekend the Lockmasters House Museum is usually open (with hot cider available). Once you've taken in Chaffeys Lock continue on Cty Rd. 9 to Cty Rd. 10. Turn right (north) on Cty Rd. 10. An intersting stop just past Devil Lake is Bedford Mills (a short loop on the left/west) featuring the beautiful old stone grist mill (now a private residence). Continue north to Cty Rd. 42 and turn left (west) to Westport. Do some shopping, have a bite to eat, enjoy the sights.

Westport to Cty Rd. 42, to Newboro, Crosby, Forfar, Philipsville and Delta - From Westport, head east along Cty Rd. 42. Stop at interesting spots along the way (i.e. Forfar Cheese Factory). If you happen to be taking this trip on Thanksgiving weekend, the Thanksgiving Festival will be on at the Delta Mill. View interesting crafts, have some hot apple cider.

fallDelta, Cty Rd. 42 to Cty Rd. 33 to Lyndhurst - continue southeast from Delta to the junction with Cty Rd. 33, turn right (southwest) to Lyndhurst. Stop and have a look at the historic Lyndhurst Bridge.

Lyndhurst, Cty Rd 33, to Hwy 15 to Cty Rd. 12 to Upper Brewers - From . Continue southwest along Cty Rd. 33 to Hwy 15 and turn left (south) on Hwy 15 and take it to Cty Rd 12. Turn right (west) on Cty Rd. 12 and take it to Upper Brewers Locks (just past the bridge).

Upper Brewers Locks to Sunbury to Inverary to Kingston - From . Upper Brewers continue west along Cty Rd. 12 to Sunbury. The road takes a jog in Sunbury. Turn left (south) into Sunbury, go a few hundred metres and then turn right (west) back onto Cty Rd. 12. Continue to Inverary.At Inverary turn left (south) and continue home to Kingston.

Of note is that there are lots of fall fairs going on in the region - you can combine a fall colour trip with a local fair. Examples include the Turkey Fair in Lyndhurst, on the third weekend in September, and the Fall Colours Studio Tour in Westport, usually held on Thanksgiving weekend, featuring a self guided tour to many local artists' and artisans' studios.
