Sweeney House

The stone defensible lockmaster's house at Jones Falls is known as "Sweeney House" after the first lockmaster, Peter Sweeney. This lockhouse was built in 1841 and Peter Sweeney served as lockmaster until his retirement in 1871. Peter and his wife Catherine both drank to excess and led a rather tumultuous life. Peter kept a diary which has survived to this day, giving a bit of a glimpse into the life of a lockmaster in the 19th century.
