NEWSLETTER - Summer 2007

This year marks the 175th anniversary of the Rideau Canal, North America's oldest continuously operating waterway, a National Historic Site of Canada and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Rideau Canal is much more than an information centre; it is the flagship for the interpretation and orientation of the entire historic Rideau Canal system. The Museum consists of four floors of exhibits explaining the history of the Rideau Canal from its construction to its exceptional role throughout history. Our recently renovated lobby now features a lock entrance that includes new displays, audio descriptions of the history of the Canal, the restored Durham boat, and much more!

We also have another big reason to celebrate this year- the designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This exciting designation is the most significant global title any site can achieve. The Rideau Canal will join the other thirteen amazing Canadian places that are presently inscribed to the World Heritage List. This is not only a national honour, but also very important for the town of Smiths Falls: the heart of the Rideau.

The Rideau Canal Museum is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and presenting the culture, heritage, and uniqueness of the Rideau Canal’s history. We not only present the combined local history of Smiths Falls and the Rideau Canal, but also how this corridor of waterways is a national treasure that brings communities together to share a common pride.

Book a tour today and experience how the Museum brings to life the stories of this amazing waterway.
