Peat Based Leaching Bed Septic System
Similar to a conventional leaching bed, but peat replaces the soil in the tile weeping trench system.
Description: The peat based leaching bed offers a number of advantages over other known alternatives. These are:
- Relatively simple in design,
- No moving parts requiring maintenance (unless a pump is required),
- There are no chemical or microbial additives required, and
- Can be installed in-ground or above-ground as site limitations dictate.
Effluent from the septic tank is discharged evenly into the leaching bed. As the effluent passes through the peat, it is renovated by microbes. The effluent is then collected and discharged into a conventional tile weeping trench system, or allowed to infiltrate into the ground under the peat.
Intended Use:
- Environmentally sensitive areas.
- Building sites with close proximity to ground andlor surface waters.
Details:
- Septic tank required.
- Uses specially formulated peat.
- Uses stone (e.g., 19 mm clear, or 19 - 53 mm screened) around distribution tile.
- Uses 75 or 100 mm PVC distribution pipe.
- Depth must meet OBC requirements for sand filter construction.
- Peat is installed in layers, and evenly compacted with snowshoes.
- Tile distribution system is constructed by hand (including placement of stone).
Estimated Cost: Prices are consistent with conventional leaching bed prices, except for the peat
which, depending on the source, may push up the cost.
