Septic Systems:
Improving Performance

Your location: Rideau Region > Rideau Residents > Septic Systems > Improving Performance of Existing Systems

Effluent Filters

Description: a filter, installed at the outlet of septic tank. This filter dramatically improves the quality of effluent discharged to the leaching bed. It is strongly recommended that an effluent filter be installed on all systems

Intended Use:
Improves effluent quality
Extends leaching bed life

Details:
Can be used in any septic tank - either as a new installation or retrofitted to an existing installation
Simple maintenance (some filters come with an alarm that indicates when they need cleaning)
Cost about $300 plus installation
Available from most licenced septic suppliers and tank manufacturers

Sand and Wood Chip Filters

Description: A sand or wood chip filter is placed between the septic tank and leaching bed to improve effluent quality prior to discharge to the leaching bed.

Intented Use:
Environmentally sensitive areas
Prolong the life of the leaching bed in impermeable soils

Details: The filter ranges from 3 m to 6 m square. It is enclosed by plastic PVC and buried beneath the ground. A pump is used to deliver the effluent to the leaching bed. Adding a filter doubles the cost of a typical septic system (a conventional leaching bed costs $23 - $33 per metre of trench).

Aerobic Treatment Units

Description:These units can be installed either ahead of or after the septic tank. Air is pumped into the sewage to increase aerobic microbe action. A mechanical pump is used for aeration.

Intented Use:
Prolong the life of the leaching bed
May be installed in a new system or an existing system

Details: Air is stirred or bubbled into the waste to break down the material. The liquid is discharged to the leaching bed. The sludge must be periodically pumped from the tank. Cost is up to $10,000

Leaching Bed Remediation

Description: A long, narrow probe with pneumatic hammer penetrates the soil. Compressed air is injected to fracture the soil. Dry polystyrene pellets are injected into the cracks in order to maintain the passageways. The process works best in soils that allow cracks (i.e. heavy clays)

Intented Use:
Prolong the life of an existing leaching bed

Details:
The cracks created by compressed air can extend to depths of 90 cm.
The system causes no damage to lawns.
Site evaluation by licenced installer with experience using the Terralift system is required.
Cost: $3,500 for a three-year guarantee system
