Combination Septic Systems

Individual system components can be grouped together to provide superior treatment. For example, Shallow Buried Trenches have been very successfully coupled with Artificial Media Filters, or, combining the Peat Based Leaching Bed concept with a subsurface Constructed Wetland, as presented here.

PeatLand systemDescription: The PeatLand concept is a patented system which uses a combination of aerobic peat select media filtration and anaerobic subsurface wetland technologies.

Intended Use:
  • Environmentally sensitive areas where a higher level of wastewater treatment is required.
  • The system is well suited for single homes, cottages, schools, commercial and communal developments. The land requirements are lower than leaching bed systems, lagoons and previous peat filter and wetland designs.
Details:
  • Pre-settlement is typically required in a septic tank or other suitable method.
  • Uses specifically processed and treated sphagnum peat.
  • Peat is installed using low pressure equipment or by manual labour
  • using snowshoes.
  • Select media for filter and wetland can vary from graded sand to absorbent aggregates depending on influent and effluent requirements.
  • Filter and wetland loading rates can vary depending on wastewater strength and flow variability
  • No skilled operator is required
  • Life cycle is estimated at greater than 15 years.
  • Estimated Costs: Typically comparable to standard on-site options.
