Artificial Media Filters Septic System

Description: These filters use an absorbent synthetic media placed as a cell to offer aerobic treatment of septic effluent. Wastewater is sprinkled over the cell and slowly percolates through it. Air circulates through the media either by forced fan or natural convection (see diagram).

Intended Use:

Environmentally sensitive areas.
Polishes septic effluent from a tank before entering leaching bed.

Details:

It is important to maintain constant conditions within the system including temperature, ventilation, loading rate and wastewater composition.
After the effluent passes through the filter, a portion of it can be returned to the septic tank for additional treatment and odour control.
The filter can be periodically cleaned and reused.
Systems can be housed in an above-grade structure, or buried in a concrete or fiberglass tank.
System requires a disposal system as per the Ontario Building Code.
Minimal property damage during installation.
Does not rely on specific soil or drainage conditions.

Estimated Costs
$8,000 - $10,000 (includes septic tank, artificial media filter, pump and controls, and small disposal system).
