Hiram and Sally lived in the township of Newport for seven years after they got married and then returned, in 1839 to the old home of Mrs. French, on the meadow at Eaton Corner. Their son Levi later lived in that house. [History of Compton County, 1896]

Funeral of Late Mrs. French.

The funeral of the late Mrs. John L. French (nee Esther Ward) was held on Monday afternoon at St. Peter's Church, where a large number of friends, neighbors and relatives assembled to pay their last respects to an old and dear friend. Among the relatives from a distance were Mr. C. A. French, Sherbrooke, son of the deceased, and Mr. Chas. Pennoyer, of Montreal, and Mr. Arthur Pennoyer, of Eastman, grandsons.

Rev. I. A. R. McDonald conducted the service and gave a short address. The remains were then conveyed to the Cookshire cemetery for interment. The casket was covered with beautiful flowers from relatives and friends.

John L. French, aged 92 years and 11 months.
