Accomplishments
of the
Management Board

Much has been accomplished in the short time since the land was acquired. The Management Board, CRCA, and volunteers have:

  • rebuilt two 26-foot bridges at Otter Creek and Otter Lake, a 100-foot bridge at Little Lake near Elgin, and a 16-foot bridge near Yarker. This included installing new cross ties, decking, safety railings, and improving abutments;
  • decked two bridges, one 100-feet and one 50-feet, at Eel Bay near Sydenham;
  • cleared away ice-storm damage, including downed trees and hanging limbs;
  • performed brushing along the length of the trail to a minimum width of 3.2 m wide using volunteer labour;
  • installed several new culverts;
  • erected Cataraqui Trail signs at most road intersections;
  • measured point-to-point distances along the trail, installed distance markers at 5 km along the trail, Smiths Falls is "zero";
  • graded, ditched, improved and compacted surfaces of the trail from Sydenham to Harrowsmith;
  • identified culvert and drainage problems along the entire length of the trail and prepared a culvert replacement plan and budget;
  • repaired damage from washouts and sink holes in several areas along the trail;
  • undertook temporary repairs to stabilize cross ties at the Chaffey's Lock bridge;
  • undertook an engineering assessment of the condition of all major bridges on the trail;
  • replaced 1000 metres of agricultural fencing in the Portland area;
  • prepared an inventory of agricultural fencing along the trail noting current conditions and establishing priorities for repair and replacement;
  • developed detailed plans and costs for vehicle barricades at intersections to prevent unauthorized entry. Erected four new gates along the trail;
  • cleared beaver blockages in several culverts and cleared numerous beaver dams flooding the trail;
  • negotiated registered easements around or through several privately held properties to insure a continuous trail;
  • erected improved safety and informational signage along the trail to assist in snowmobiling safety and convenience;
  • commenced work on a master plan for the development of the trail;
  • commenced work on a detailed inventory of historical, biological and geographical features of the trail;
  • prepared a printed a map of the trail;
  • recruited a large number of dedicated volunteers for trail development and maintenance;
  • formed a partnership with other regional trail groups to form a common front for fund-raising and regional trail network development;
  • replaced an ageing timber bridge structure where the Opinicon Road passes over the trail near Frontenac #10 with a infill and 5:1 access ramps on both sides to provide safe passage for both trail and road users.
