Sandstone

Sandstone

An exposure of bedded Nepean sandstone near Philipsville. Much of the farmland in the Rideau region is underlain by flat lying sediments, mostly bedded sandstone and limestone. Cottage country in the central lakes area has more rugged topography due to the older, harder Shield rocks, composed mainly of granite, gneiss, and crystalline limestone.
