Lower Beveridges

Letting the Water Out at Lower Beveridges Lock
The cranks on the lower gates at all locks control valves in the gates. In the left side picture, the lock is full to overflowing, and the water below the lock is calm. In the right side picture, a canalman is cranking open the valves, and the water is boiling out, draining the lock, lowering it to the level of the lower lake. Once the water from inside the lock has drained out, the gates can be opened and boats can proceed inside, ready to be "locked up"
